This is a
disorder caused by an imbalance of uric acid in
the body. Uric acid, containing nitrogen, is the
end product of the metabolism of protein by the
liver and kidney. It leads to deposition of this
substance as salts (urates) of the acid in the
joints, usually the big toe, causing
inflammation, reddening, swelling, and severe
pain. The kidneys may also be damaged due to
formation of stones. |
