This is the
degeneration of the
inter-vertebral discs (fibrous
discs of cartilage that connect
adjacent vertebrae) and the
joints of the spine. It is
characterised by pain in the
neck and lumbar region, where
the movement may become
restricted. There may be muscle
weakness and difficulty in
movement if the spinal cord is
compressed. Due to degeneration
of the discs and formation of
osteophytes (bony projections),
the space occupied by the discs
is reduced. Physiotherapy, neck
collar, support belt in the
lumbar region and traction are
some of the methods adopted to
relieve pain. |
