This is a progressive, inflammatory rheumatic disease affecting the spine and hip joints, characterised by stiffening and pain. In the early stages there is low back pain in the lumbar region and stiffness, especially on rising in the morning. In the long run the fibrous tissue in the spine replaces and fuses spinal discs and ligaments. There is no known cure in allopathy and the disease progresses slowly over a number of years.
